Although Buffet depicted various flowers in his entire life, among all, “iris” is the flower that he repeatedly painted. From 1950s to the early 60s, flowers, such as thistle and calendula, tulip, iris, etc., were painted naively in mono-tone colors, and in the late 60s, red anemones and zinnia, yellow and purple ombelle were painted strongly focusing lines and colors. And from 1970s, rose and anemones, sun flowers, begonia, hydrangea and chrysanthemum were more powerfully painted. Iris is a lovely flower. It is thought that the strong and liner impression of Buffet’s style wouldn’t match. However, arranging it on the vase makes a sweet impression. Looking at “IRIS DANS UN VASE” may remind of a pretty girl inclining her head in doubt and standing lonely. It seems like the world of “Machiyoikusa (evening grass)” by Takehisa Yumeji. It is a pleasure to share such delicate and kindness hidden in the work, with the artist.
