Mai Trung Thu (also called Mai Thu), who born near Hai Phong, Vietnam in 1906, became a first-year student of the Indochina Art School in 1925, and after five years of training, attended 1937 Paris World Exposition, at the same time he migrated to Paris with the artist Le Pho (1907-2001). The transition from oil painting to silk painting, which was the means of expression until then, was gradually established from realistic expression to unique style. In addition to participation in the Society of Salon des Indépendants and Salon d'Automne Exhibition, he also worked as a one-stringed player.
“Head of a Young Girl” (Lot162) and “The Alphabet” (Lot 161) that are representative styles of Mai Thu. Being widely recognized as a ”child painter”, Mai Thu has produced a large number of children's works since 1940. In the Orient, it is said that the motif of a “Hundreds of Children” and “Karako Children” is often made a fine print, as represented by private prints, and has been produced to be affixed in the room of the New Year. While exhibiting works in numerous solo exhibitions, Mai Thu participates in UNICEF's campaign to save poor children, and works on peace paintings and war paintings against the Vietnam War. Reproductions by printing and printing, posters, postcards, book illustrations, bindings, etc. are displayed in private houses. Prioritizing the element as a reproduction art that calls itself ”healing” are actively developed more than ”paintings”. Mai Thu’ children in his paintings have thought of children who had to be sacrificed at the time of the Vietnam War, and have hopes of prosperity, peace and offspring.
