In the Hand embodies Chiharu Shiota’s profound exploration of existence, memory, and human emotion. The work centers on a lifelike bronze hand, which seems to gently support a complex network formed by countless thin oxidized brass wires. These wires form chaotic yet organic geometric shapes, resembling the flow of thoughts or the entanglement of emotions, symbolizing the fragility and complexity of the individual’s inner world.
The solid presence of the bronze hand contrasts sharply with the delicate, intricate wires, suggesting the subtle relationship between strength and vulnerability, control and disorder. Observers may be reminded of human presence, the agency of the hand, and the connection between the self and the outside world. Through the interplay of materials and forms, Shiota materializes abstract psychological states, making the work not only a sculpture but also a contemplative space for memory, emotion, and vitality.
